Frame & Dome Care
Your frame or dome display is both artwork and a preservation piece. Proper care protects delicate specimens, prevents fading, and keeps your display looking pristine for years.
Pest prevention:
- Keep displays away from food storage areas.
- Inspect occasionally for tiny debris or webbing, which can indicate pests.
- If pests are suspected, isolate the piece immediately and contact me or another preservation specialist.
Placement & Environment:
- Avoid direct sunlight. UV light can fade wings and weaken natural pigments and colors.
-
Keep away from humidity. Moisture can cause mold, warping, and specimen deterioration. Ex: do not place in the bathroom.
- Stable temperatures are best. Do not place near vents, heaters, or exterior doors.
Handling instructions:
- Lift domes from the base, not the glass top.
- Wash and dry hands before handling, or wear gloves, to prevent transferring oils.
- Avoid frequent repositioning, which can loosen mounting pins or adhesives.
- If glass becomes cracked or damaged, replace promptly or contact a professional to protect the specimen.
Cleaning Instructions:
- Dust glass gently with a soft microfiber cloth.
- For deeper cleaning, lightly mist cleaner onto the cloth, not directly onto the glass. I have found that a 1.1 ration of 70% isopropyl alcohol and distilled water works best for a streak-free shine!
- Do not open sealed frames or domes for cleaning unless required.
- Never use compressed air inside displays. Air pressure can dislodge specimens or other delicate elements.
Safety Notes:
- Keep out of reach from children and pets.
